Colors and textures create rich depth in the work from the surface of water to wide open skies filled with puffy clouds and starry nightscapes. Interactions of land, sky, flora, and fauna become a connected web of visual language that informs each following image. The human experience in the landscape is also a recurring theme in my work. The intersection of humans and wilderness starts with roads that lead us on trails and open waters that allows us to explore the adventure of wild places. Through these adventures we learn about the meaning of our undeniable relationship to the environment and what it means to live on planet earth.
I invite you to explore the photographs on this site that took three years of creating, editing, and
designing. Take your time with them to discover the subtle details that make the images full of life.
My hope is that the photographs of these amazing places speak to you and inspire you
on your next adventure. - Dusty
Elements of an Image
In the editing process, I use these four crucial elements as criteria for determining which images show my artistic vision.
Four elements that create an inspiring photograph.
What is the Content?
The most important element is what is in the photo (the subject). The content of an image needs to be relevant and universal to speak in a clear and concise visual language.
Composition creates perfection.
A photographer is a master of this element. The composition must create eye movements that keeps the viewer engaged and intrigued.
Beauty Lighting.
Photography is a medium based on recording light, therefore the lighting and tones of a photograph have to be just perfect. There are lots of types of beautiful lighting. Having the right lighting for your subject and composition is key to highlighting the content.
The Drama of the Moment.
The final element is the drama in a captured moment. This element conveys the clarity in the chaos of the world. Sometimes a “Happy Accident” can create this drama, where being at the right place at the right time was the magic of the moment. Other times the other three elements simply align and become the drama of the narrative.
